  • Q: What is a valid form of identification?
  • A: To establish the identity of an individual, a valid form of identification must be presented, typically in the form of an official document that displays the person's name and other identifying information. Examples include GA driver’s license or non-driver’s ID card, U.S. passport, Foreign passport stamped by the U.S Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Driver’s license or non-driver’s identification card issued by a territory of the United States, another state, Canada or Mexico, an identification card issued by any branch of the military for active-duty personnel, retirees or dependents, an identification card issued by the US Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services called a Permanent Resident or “green” card

  • A: A notary public is a state-appointed official who acts as an unbiased witness to help prevent fraud in the signing of important documents. They are known for their integrity and perform a variety of duties to ensure the authenticity of these documents.

 

  • Q: What a notary public is not? 
  • A: It is important to note that a notary public is not a legal professional, such as an attorney or judge, and does not have the authority to provide legal advice. Their role is limited to witnessing the signing of documents and performing other duties as prescribed by state law.

 

  • Q: What documents can be notarized?
  • A: For a document to be notarized, it must meet the following requirements:
  1. The document must contain language that commits the signer in some way.
  2. The document must have an original signature from the signer.
  3. The document must include notarial certificate language, which can appear in the document itself or in an attachment.
It is possible to notarize a document that does not have a date, but the signer should either fill in the date or mark through it if there is a space for it. If the document does not have a space for a date, the signer may date it next to their signature or mark.
Notarization is also possible when the signer is hospitalized or in a care facility, but the notary will take steps to ensure that the signer is capable of understanding the document and is not incapacitated.
Faxes and photocopies can only be notarized if they contain an original signature.
